Why www.911LostDog.com Was Created

911LostDog was created to help dogs with homes find their way back to their families quickly and to keep them out of the homeless dog population.

Every year, thousands of dogs in South Carolina end up roaming neighborhoods and wooded areas, sitting in shelters or rescues, or waiting in foster homes. While many of these dogs truly need new homes, many others already have families who are desperately searching for them. By reuniting lost dogs with their owners faster, we can free up critical shelter and rescue resources for dogs who are truly homeless.

Imagine if there were one place everyone knew to go to post a lost dog or report a found one. A single, trusted location where people could quickly share detailed information, such as size, color, gender, and last known location, to help narrow the search and speed up reunions. That is the purpose of 911LostDog.

Before technology became such a large part of our daily lives, finding a lost dog was often simple. If you found a dog, you usually knew where it lived and returned it home. If not, you took it to the local shelter. If you lost a dog, you went to that same shelter to find it. Today, that process is no longer so straightforward. Information is scattered across multiple websites, social media platforms, and apps, and many people do not know where to look first or are not on social media at all.

911LostDog helps solve this problem by providing one central place to look for and post lost or found dogs. When someone finds a dog, they can quickly check to see if an owner is searching. When someone loses a dog, they know exactly where to go to begin their search.

We also hope to inspire a shift in mindset. When someone sees a stray dog, the first thought should be: “Someone is looking for this dog. I’m going to help get them home.”

By using 911LostDog, you’re helping keep dogs with homes out of the system and helping shelters, rescues, and volunteers focus their time and resources on dogs who truly need them.

Together, we can reunite families, reduce overcrowding, and make a meaningful difference for dogs in our communities.

And please remember: adopt, foster, and volunteer whenever you can. Homeless dogs are counting on us.
